چکیده مقاله:

Many biological effects of exposure to extremely low frequency electromagnetic fields(ELF-EMFs) have been documented, but little work carried out on plants. A meiotic study wasperformed on Brassica napus L as C3 plant and Zea mays L as a C4 plant exposed to electromagneticfields. Our investigations were focused on plants grown from wet pretreated seeds with3 and 10 mT for a 4 h exposure time and compared with the control plants of maize. Also ourinvestigation used plants grown from dry pretreated seeds with 10 mT for 4 h, wet pretreatedseeds with 10 mT for 2 h, and a control line of canola. A significant difference was observedfor meiotic characters studied among treatments. In canola the mean value of total, terminal, and intercalary chiasmata reduced significantly in plants grown from exposed seeds, indicatingthat EMFs caused reduction in the mean value of the genetic recombination. Other meioticcharacteristics including ring bivalent and quadrivalent formation reduced significantly as well.In maize the mean value of total, terminal and intercalary chiasmata changed significantly in theplants grown from exposed seeds to 3 mT intensity, indicating increase in genetic recombination. Moreover, formation of ring bivalent and quadrivalent increased significantly. All results suggested these plants react differently in some aspects against EMFs as abioticstress.

Maize (Zea mays L.).

Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation is an effective method for introducing genes into maize. In this chapter, we describe a detailed protocol for genetic transformation of the maize genotype Hi II. Our starting plant material is immature embryos cocultivated with an Agrobacterium strain carrying a standard binary vector. In addition to step-by-step laboratory transformation proced...

Extremely low frequency-pulsed electromagnetic fields affect proangiogenic-related gene expression in retinal pigment epithelial cells

Objective(s): It is known that extremely low frequency-pulsed electromagnetic fields (ELF-PEMF) influence multiple cellular and molecular processes. Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells have a significant part in the emergence and pathophysiology of several ocular disorders, such as neovascularization. This study assessed the impact of ELF-PEMF on the proangiogenic features of RPE cells. Mate...

Effects Of electromagnetic waves with High Frequency(940MHz)Cause increase Catalase and H2O2 in Zea mays L

Here we investigate the effect of electromagnetic waves with high radio frequency radiation on the antioxidant enzyme activities and seed germination of Zea mays. Three groups of Zea mays seeds were used in this study. The first group was only exposed to RF radiation emitted from the mobile phone simulator. The second group was only exposed to RF radiation emitted from the mobile phone simulato...

B chromosomes in popcorn (Zea mays L.).

Cytological analysis of microsporogenesis in 72 popcorn plants, comprising nine from the original population (CMS-43, S(0)) and 63 from seven cycles of self-fertilization (S(1) to S(7)), one plant of S(0) generation (plant 2) was identified with B chromosomes. The number of B chromosomes varied from two to three in the same anther. The pattern of chromosome pairing and meiotic behavior of Bs we...

Induction of chromosomal aberrations in human primary fibroblasts and immortalized cancer cells exposed to extremely-low-frequency electromagnetic fields

Background: Rapidly increasing possibilities of exposure to environmental extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields (ELF-EMF) have become a topic of worldwide investigation. Epidemiological and laboratory studies suggest that exposure to ELF-EMF may increase cancer risk therefore assessment of chromosomal damage in various cell lines might be of predictive value for future risk es...
